Enterprise Ireland hosts ‘Rules of Origin’ webinar

The webinar will address the complex rules that Irish businesses must understand around the country of origin of products traded between Ireland and the UK post-Brexit

Enterprise Ireland is hosting a webinar, ‘Rules of Origin: How Rules of Origin affect your business to trade to, from or through the UK’, which takes place on Tuesday, 23 February at 09:30-10:30am.

Rules of origin form an integral part of the new trade and cooperation agreement (TCA) between the EU and UK. The rules have led to disruption in supply chains since 01 January, potentially adding significant extra costs on importers and exporters, particularly in Ireland where many Irish firms source goods from distribution hubs in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland). Minister for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Robert Troy TD will open the webinar and welcome delegates. The guest speaker is Carol Lynch of BDO. Carol is a partner in BDO’s Customs and International Trade Services department. She has over 25 years' experience in customs services and specialises in customs, trade tax and regulation. The webinar will be hosted by Newstalk presenter and contributor Jonathan Healy.

Carol and Jonathan will discuss the background and the implications of rules of origin for Irish businesses, and some solutions that can possibly help to resolve the current challenges that these businesses face. The webinar is aimed at Enterprise Ireland and Local Enterprise Office clients, but is also open to all Irish companies that trade with the United Kingdom.

Minister Troy said: “It is important that Irish businesses remain informed and alert to the new arrangements and requirements that are now in place post-Brexit. The Government and my Department continue to engage with stakeholders to assist them navigate the new trading relationship between Ireland and the UK. “We must ensure that we minimise supply chain disruptions and any other barriers that inhibit the smooth flow of goods and services. Enterprise Ireland’s ‘Rules of Origin’ webinar is a timely forum for businesses who trade with the UK to come together to learn more about the changed trading environment and what it means for them. The webinar specifically addresses one of the most complex issues that businesses affected by Brexit must be aware of and understand. I encourage Irish company representatives to attend this event and benefit from the insights and solutions that will be discussed.”

Giles O’Neill, Manager of the Brexit Unit with Enterprise Ireland said: “The trading landscape has changed for all Irish businesses dealing with the UK, regardless of their size or the sector they operate in. The new rules and procedures can be complex and time-consuming, but if they are not dealt with correctly, companies may risk delays, inconvenience and additional costs. “The ‘Rules of Origin’ webinar will provide expert discussion on a key Brexit topic but will also allow attendees to shape the conversation around the specific issues that matter to them. The Enterprise Ireland Brexit Unit works constantly with our partners and clients to provide the supports and advice that companies need at this time. We will continue to provide forums such as this that respond to the questions businesses have and the challenges they face.”
